Witcher 3 DLSS frame generation turns off: dialogue and override checks

Separate a setting that resets after dialogue from an unavailable feature, then test native settings and a compatible per-game NVIDIA override without assuming RTX 40 supports every mode.

Check whether frame generation actually resets after dialogue, or was unavailable from the start. October 4–5 Steam players describe resets after reaching Novigrad. One reports an NVIDIA App workaround; an RTX 4060 Ti owner could not configure the suggested override mode. This is not an all-GPU repair.

Identify the failing setting

Record the exact option label, GPU, driver, app version, renderer, storefront and full game build. DLSS upscaling, ordinary frame generation and multi-frame-generation overrides are different options. Reopen the graphics menu immediately before and after the same dialogue so a drop in FPS is not your only evidence.

If DLSS is absent on Xbox Play Anywhere PC, the official October 1 5.00b notes specifically address that availability issue. Check your storefront's current supported update; those notes do not claim to repair every Steam dialogue reset. Console users cannot follow this NVIDIA App route.

Establish a native-settings baseline

  1. Photograph or record existing in-game and per-game driver settings.
  2. If a driver override is active, restore its application-controlled option and apply it.
  3. Enable the supported in-game feature, repeat the same dialogue and inspect whether the setting persists.
  4. Repeat once after restarting the game, keeping the same settings and save.

If it already fails without an override, record that baseline rather than assuming the app caused it. Do not replace DLSS DLLs or install an unlock mod merely because a forum mentions another GPU.

Test an override only when supported

For a compatible game, NVIDIA documents Graphics → Program Settings and its Driver Settings section. Use this game's entry, not a global change affecting other games. The documented RTX 40/50 frame-generation model upgrade is distinct from the RTX 50 multi-frame-generation override. Current labels may differ; a greyed-out or unsupported mode is not permission to force it.

The October thread has one positive override report, with no controlled proof that it fixes every reset. If you test a supported option, close the game before applying it, reopen and replay the exact trigger. Restore “Use the 3D application setting” or the current equivalent if it does not help.

If it resets again

Keep a playable native configuration and report the trigger plus before/after menu captures to CDPR support. If generation stays enabled but feels delayed, use the base-FPS comparison. An available setting, stable persistence and responsive gameplay are three separate checks.
