Getting started

How long is The Witcher 3? Plan a story or completionist run

Budget roughly 50–60 hours for a focused story run, and much longer for side quests; use your own pace rather than a promised completion time.

For planning, allow roughly 50–60 hours for a focused base-story run and 100 hours or more when you explore heavily. These are broad legacy player/developer reference points, not measured Remastered averages. Difficulty, Gwent, exploration and expansion content can change the total substantially.

Turn the estimate into a schedule

Available session50–60 hours of story time
30 minutesAbout 100–120 sessions
1 hourAbout 50–60 sessions
2 hoursAbout 25–30 sessions

This is simple time budgeting, not a forecast of how quickly you will complete individual quests. Short sessions suit one contract or one step of a scavenger hunt. Longer sessions make it easier to follow a main-story sequence without forgetting the previous objective.

Decide what counts as finishing

  • Base story: reaching the main campaign ending.
  • Story plus expansions: also finishing Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
  • Completionist run: adding contracts, treasure hunts, Gwent, exploration and other optional goals.

Free expansion inclusion changes what you own, not how much of it a base-story estimate covers. We do not have a verified current combined-expansion completion average, and the future Songs of the Past expansion cannot be included in a measured total.

Keep the run manageable

Choose one optional goal per region rather than treating every question mark as mandatory. Keep saves before major quest cutoffs if you want romance or card-collection choices. If you mainly want an expansion, compare the standalone expansion start with continuing your existing character. Neither requires completing every map marker first.
