Saves & PC

The Witcher 3 save will not load: missing DLC error

Check the exact DLC named by a save, install required content on the destination, and use the limited PC file-repair route only for an installation problem.

Read the missing content name

First match the save’s required content with what is installed. A cross-platform save can exist in Load Game and still fail because its destination lacks an expansion or required mod.

Check entitlements and installed content

  1. Keep the original save and record the exact error and named DLC.
  2. Check the current edition, full build and installed expansion status on the destination.
  3. If moving between devices, compare required content with the source. The older Complete-to-base example in support requires the expansions on the base installation.
  4. For cog-marked saves, separately compare the required mods. An unavailable mod is not repaired by buying an expansion.

The current free expansion inclusion simplifies ownership, but older console downloads and actual file installation still matter.

If the PC installation itself is incomplete

The older CDPR missing-DLC article recommends removing mods, replacing the game installation’s DLC folder and verifying files. Preserve saves and a copy of any custom files first. If following that repair, operate only on the actual game installation’s DLC folder; do not delete Documents, saved games or a launcher library root.

Use the correct launcher verification command to redownload required files. This is a PC installation route, not an instruction to remove console save storage. Check the error again with a separate save copy.

If the same error remains

Send support the named content, source/destination editions and enabled mod lists. A fresh-game test can distinguish an installation that launches from a particular save dependency, but does not repair that dependency. Do not repeatedly overwrite the failing save or assume cross progression supplied every required mod.
