King’s Gambit: Cerys or Hjalmar, cellar escape and succession

Choose which sibling to help after the feast attack, follow Cerys’s evidence or Hjalmar’s village route, and finish the coronation.

Helping Cerys leads to her coronation and an investigation of the attack; helping Hjalmar leads to his coronation through the vildkaarl hunt. Cerys's route also reaches the Place of Power beneath Kaer Trolde. Save before selecting the sibling.

Trigger the feast sequence

Complete Possession and The Lord of Undvik, then return to Kaer Trolde. Speak to Crach and defeat the bears attacking the feast before choosing whom to assist. See the separate Possession guide if Cerys's earlier task is still unfinished.

Investigate with Cerys

Inspect a bear, follow the tainted mead smell to the drinking horn and speak to Hjort. In the cellar, inspect the barrels. When fire blocks the exit, break obstructing barrels with Aard or your weapon and take the escape tunnel; it passes the Place of Power.

Back at the cellar entrance, follow footprints from the broken bottle to the torn cloth. Pursue Arnvald and investigate the Birna lead to complete the case.

Follow Hjalmar's action route

At Fornhala, inspect the altar, incense and blood trail to the house trapdoor. Enter the cave, defeat Halgrim and continue to Artis and the ritual. This route does not uncover the same mastermind evidence as Cerys's investigation.

Finish the succession you chose

Return to Crach, then attend Coronation at Gedyneith. The title of the completed investigation and the crowned ruler should match the branch you selected.

A post-investigation save does not reopen the earlier choice. If an objective stalls, capture its text and the current clue before trying another checkpoint; no tested command recovery is supplied. This page covers assisting either sibling, without promising an unrelated ruler branch or unchanged current reward values.
