Getting started

The Witcher 3 New Game Plus not available: unlock and save checks

Use a completed regular-story save to start New Game Plus, check the installed edition, and avoid trying to start another NG+ from an NG+ save.

Check the source save

Finish the main story on a regular playthrough, then start New Game Plus from the main menu. The official support article says an existing NG+ save cannot be used to start another NG+.

Three checks before you start

  1. Story completion: choose a regular-playthrough save made after completing the main storyline. An expansion-only milestone is not the stated unlock requirement.
  2. Save type: distinguish a regular game from an already-existing New Game Plus run.
  3. Installed edition: Complete/GOTY embeds NG+; the older base release needed the free New Game Plus DLC installed. Use this older installation advice only for that edition.

Begin and keep your previous run

Keep a separate copy or slot for the completed campaign. Return to the main menu, select the new-game flow and New Game Plus, then choose the eligible completed save when prompted. Check the selected character before confirming.

If the option is still missing, record the edition, full patch number and whether the selected save is regular or NG+. If you are returning through Remastered, reset skill points are a different update behavior; they do not prove your story-completion flag is missing.

What this checklist does not restore

This is the official eligibility route, not a save-editor repair. It does not provide an NG++ workaround or guarantee transfer of every quest item, card or progression flag. If your only save is from an NG+ run, the support article directs you to begin a regular new game for a new eligible journey. For a cloud save that never appears, use cross progression first.
